More information on Meltrons' custom load cell solutions
Here at Meltrons we provide quality industrial load cells and assemblies to a variety of industries across New Zealand. Also commonly referred to as Load Sensors or Load Transducers, our load cells convert load - or force - into electrical mV output signals allowing for easy, efficient weighing in any number of applications.
Perhaps you're after a load cell for a floor scale or process weighing? Then the MT401 Shear Beam Load Cell might be the best fit for you. Measuring tensile forces? The S Type MT501 Load Cell easily handles forces from 50kg all the way up to 30,000kg, making it a versatile option. During tests, peak loads or forces can be captured by our MI104 electronic indicator (please view our MCSK kits for these solutions). And if you’re in need of the ideal solution for use in tank weighing, plant engineering, or process weighing? Then one of our Waterproof Tank Weighing Assemblies should do the job.
Whether it’s one of the options above or something different entirely, we’re able to offer a selection of flexible, cost-effective load cell solutions for almost any task. And if it’s a custom or replacement load cell you’re looking for, feel free to contact us and we may be able to design and develop a product to meet your needs.

- 9 Things You Need To Consider When Selecting A Load Cell
Selecting the ideal load cell for the weighing task at hand can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Learn to look past the specifications sheet with our list of the things you should be considering when selecting your next load cell.
CAN I BUILD MY OWN PLATFORM WEIGHING SYSTEM?
Yes. 4 load cells with a mount can make a platform weighing system. For a platform of less than 600mm*600mm, one load cell at the centre of the platform might be sufficient.
To expand on this, the heart of any weighing system is the load cell which converts load / force into a measurable electrical output. Typically, a platform weighing system comprises of 4 load cells, load cell foot, Junction Box, Weighing indicator (digital reader) etc.
The load cells which support the platform are be connected to the Junction box, and then a cable is connected from the Junction box to the indicator. After an on-site calibration with a known load, the platform weighing system is ready to use for weighing.
HOW CAN I WEIGH MY EXISTING TANK/HOPPER?
A weigh module (load cell with its mounting assembly) is a weighing device that consists of a load cell and the mounting hardware needed to attach the load cell to a platform, conveyor, tank, hopper or vessel to make it a weighing scale. Typically, three or four weigh modules are used to fully support the full weight of the object. This effectively converts the object into a scale.
Depending on the geometry and capacity of the tank or hopper, a shear beam, pancake, compression or tension load cell can be used.
CAN I CAPTURE PEAK FORCES WITH YOUR EQUIPMENT?
An indicator with a Peak Hold function can “freeze” the peak load seen by the load cell. The Peak Hold Function is particularly useful when a destructive test is conducted on a test specimen.
To see the continuous load reading from the start, an indicator with an RS232 port is useful so that all weight / force readings can be captured on a computer through a PC’s serial port.
DO YOU HAVE WIRELESS OPTIONS FOR HANGING/WEIGHING APPLICATIONS?
For a wireless option, the load cell / junction box is connected to a transmitter which can transmit the weight reading to a wireless handheld indicator. If more than one wireless indicator is used at the same premises, it is important to set the transmitter and indicator frequencies of each system to a different frequency to avoid interference.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO DESIGN A CUSTOM MADE LOAD CELL / LOAD PIN?
Yes, we can make a custom made load cell / load pin for your application, if a standard load cell cannot be used in your application. With a sketch showing the preferred load cell dimensions and expected maximum load, we can study the feasibility of designing and manufacturing the load cells.
HOW CAN I CONNECT MORE LOAD CELLS TO ONE INDICATOR OR TRANSMITTER?
By using a junction box, you can connect more than one load cell to one indicator or transmitter. When multiple load cells are connected to a Junction box, the junction box output port sends an average signal measured from all of the load cells. Junction boxes also have potentiometers to trim individual load cell signal, if the reader does not show the same reading when a known weight is placed at the load cell locations.
WHAT IS A TRANSMITTER?
A transmitter is an electronic device that converts the load cell signal (mV/V) into an analogue signal (eg: 0-5V, 0-10V, 4-20mA) that easily communicates with other devices like PLC. Every load cell has a specific output sensitivity, so you will have to calibrate the transmitter when you first install the unit. There are indicators that have analogue output options if a weight display is needed in addition to analogue output.
